A place to call home

Busy sidewalks, full of people heading off on their destination…the neighborhood teems with purpose and vitality. It almost seem like a world unto itself. Restaurants, food markets, bakeries and business of all kinds abound. The atmosphere is warm and lively; people greet one another in Portuguese, Spanish and English. Homes are neat and well kept. It is clear that people are proud to be residents of the “Ironbound”, located in the city of Newark. “The Ironbound”, also known as “down-neck” because it is located at the narrowest geographical part of the city, was named as such for variety of reasons. Perhaps it was because at one time it was surrounded by several railroads; or because it was home to several iron foundries. For whatever reason, “The Ironbound” has become the cherished home to many who came from other places and made a fresh start in a new country. Many different ethnic groups contributed their best and most unique characteristics to creating the culture of the Ironbound of today; a warm and welcoming neighborhood replete with all foods, services and business that a larger area might offer. A great spirit of neighborhood pride and willingness to contribute to the community exists amongst the residents of the Ironbound who are proud to make this community their home. Limitless possibilities for individual advancement and growth exist not only in the “Ironbound”, but also in the city of Newark today.
